It is also used to seal cracks in the hive, which is why Propolis is also called Bee Glue. Other names for Bee Propolis are bee putty, Bienenharz (German), Brazilian green propolis, Brazilian propolis, Bulgarian propolis, Propolin H, caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE), WSDP, cera alba, chizukit, cinnamic acid, terpenes, galangin, Greek propolis, hive dross, propolis balsam, propolis resin, propolis wax, propolisina (Spanish), Russian penicillin, Taiwanese propolis and WSDP.

In latest researches, Bee Propolis has shown antifungal activity on various Candida.
Candida albicans strains were collected from HIV-positive patients with oral candidiasis. The research studied the inhibitory effect of Bee Propolis on Candida albicans and compared it with standardized antifungal agents nystatin, clotrimazole, econazole and fluconazole. The Candida albicans strains showed resistance to standardized antifungal agents, while Bee Propolis extract inhibited the in vitro growth of C. albicans and formed inhibition zones similar to the ones formed by nystatin.

In another research the antifungal effect of Bee Propolis has been studied on 80 strains of Candida yeasts. The yeasts showed a clear Bee Propolis antifungal activity in the following order of sensitivity: C. albican s> C. tropicalis > C. krusei > C. guilliermondii.

Propolis ointment shows much success in treating genital herpes

A scientific research on treating genital herpes showed amazing results of Propolis treament. 46 men and 4 women between age 18 and 69, all with a recurrent genital herpes simplex virus type 2, participated in a scientific research on treating genital herpes.

Patients were treated during an active outbreak with either a 3 % propolis ointment, 5 % acyclovir ointment, or placebo ointment 4 times daily for 10 days.

  • On day 3 of the treatment, 50 % on propolis ointment, 27 % on acyclovir and 0 % taking placebo had crusted lesions.
  • On day 10 of the treatment, and of the patients who initially had ulcerations, 100 % were healed in the propolis group, 80 % in the acyclovir group and 70 % in the placebo group were healed.

When after 10 days the overall treatment was completed, 24/30 patients had healed in the propolis group, 14/30 in the acyclovir group and 12/30 in the placebo group. No adverse effects related to the medication were noted in any of the groups at any of the examinations.

Genital herpes is the most common sexually transmitted disease in the developed world and recurrent genital herpes infections can be difficult to treat. Both cold sores and genital herpes have reached epidemic proportions in the U.S. Since the late 1970s, the number of people with genital herpes has increased by 30%. Currently, the leading OTC brand and the leading prescription drug add up to $60 million in sales per year. Topical acyclovir, topical lemon balm and topical lysine have been used with some success. We now have another not only viable but perhaps preferable option: Propolis is rich in flavonoids that have demonstrable anti-viral properties in vitro. Propolis exhibits its antimicrobial effects by inhibiting cell division, disorganizing the cytoplasmic membrane in the cell wall and inhibiting protein synthesis.

Word of caution

In general, propolis is safe to use. It is a non-toxic substance and will not cause irritation for most people.

However, like with other honey bee products, there are some people who are allergic to propolis.

You may be one of them if you are:

  • allergic to any bee product (pollen, honey, royal jelly),
  • allergic to bee stings,
  • an asthma patient.

If you believe you could be allergic to propolis, please discuss your physician before using propolis or any other bee product. Even if you are not in the above categories it is advised to start taking propolis gradually. In the first days use only small amounts and, if you do not detect any side effects, slowly increase the intake to the outlined dosage.

Propolis Extract

Propolis is a substance that honeybees make to provide protection against harmful bacteria, viruses and fungi. This resin is usually the sticky coating around buds that offers protection from the weather elements, bacteria, fungi, molds, and viruses. Like pollen, propolis is a bee product that cannot be clearly defined and varies from sample to sample due to the natural collection process. Nevertheless, different bee propolis extracts share considerable similarity in their physical and general chemical nature.

While hundreds of chemical compounds have been identified from bee propolis extract, the main chemical classes in propolis are flavonoids, phenolics and various aromatic compounds. Flavonoids are well-known plant compounds that have antioxidant, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral, and anti-inflammatory properties. Other properties of propolis include acting as a local anesthetic, reducing spasms, healing gastric ulcers and strengthening capillaries. Bee propolis extract also contains some volatile oils, terpenes and beeswax, but these compounds are not believed to contribute as significantly to the chemical properties and effects of propolis.

Propolis extract is scientifically proven to be extremely helpful in assisting the alleviation of many common health concerns such as viral and bacterial infections, boosting the immune system and helping the body overcome illnesses including ulcers, colds, stress, hypertension, pharyngitis, and periodontal problems.

Prevention and Treatment of Cancer

One of the most exciting recent findings on propolis is its efficacy in cancer prevention and treatment.

Clinical studies have shown that Propolis reduces the size of tumors and prevents the development of cancerous cells. Propolis inhibits cancer cell growth by increasing the process of apoptosis (programmed cell death, the process our body uses to get rid of old, useless cells).

This particular property of propolis is connected to its strong antioxidant capability and the activity of the compound CAPE.

Several new studies into the potential benefits of propolis in treating/inhibiting certain types of cancer are underway and the projected outcomes look very promising.
